BASIC RAISED ROLLS OR BREAD 
1 c. milk, scalded
2 tbsp. shortening
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 pkg. dry yeast
1/4 c. lukewarm water (110-115 degrees)
1 well beaten egg
3 1/2 c. flour

Combine milk, shortening, sugar, and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast that has been dissolved in warm water. Add egg. Gradually stir in flour to form soft dough. Beat vigorously. Cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk (about 1 1/2-2 hours). Shape in any desired forms. Let rise and bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes, depending on size.
