FRESH APPLE CAKE 
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
3 1/2 c. chopped apples
1/2 c. walnuts
1 tsp. vanilla

Sift flour, soda, salt and cinnamon. Cream sugar and shortening until fluffy. Add eggs; beat well. Add vanilla. Stir in apples. Add dry ingredients slowly until just mixed. Add nuts. Bake at 350 degrees in 9 x 13 inch pan for 45-50 minutes.

CARAMEL FROSTING:

Melt 1/4 cup butter over low heat. Add 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar. Cook over low heat 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add 2 tablespoons milk, bring to a boil, cool a little. Add 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
