BROWNIES 
2/3 cup sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup butter
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8x8x2-inch pan.

Measure sifted flour, add baking powder and salt, and sift again. Melt butter and chocolate over hot water. Add sugar gradually to beaten eggs; mix thoroughly. Stir in chocolate mixture. Add flour; mix well. Stir in nuts and vanilla.

Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes for moist, chewy brownies, or 30 minutes for cake-like brownies. Remove from oven and brush top with melted butter while still warm.

Cool on a wire rack in pan. Cut into large squares.
