DATE FILLED ICE BOX COOKIES 
Cookie:

2 c. brown sugar
2 c. shortening
2 eggs
4 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

Variations: ginger, nuts, raisins or chocolate can be added.

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat. Stir in flour, salt and baking powder, sifted together. Chill over night. Slice and bake. Spread date filling between slices.

Date Filling:

1/2 c. sugar
1 c chopped dates
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 1/2 c. water

Cook until thickened. Cool.
