OLD-FASHIONED BREAD AND BUTTER
PICKLES
 
4 qt. thinly sliced unpared cucumbers
6 med. white onions, thinly sliced
3 cloves garlic, crushed (or to taste)
1 sweet green pepper
1 sweet red pepper or 1 (4 oz.) jar pimento
1/3 c. coarse salt
3 c. white vinegar
5 c. sugar
2 tbsp. mustard seed
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric

Combine vegetables, garlic, salt. Cover with ice cubes and mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours. Drain well. Combine remaining ingredients. Mix with cucumbers in large kettle. Bring just to boil. Seal at once in hot sterilized jars. Makes 8 pints. (I also process in boiling water bath for 10 minutes.)
