CHEWY PICNIC BARS 
1 c. sifted flour
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 eggs
1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped walnuts or pecans
1 c. shredded coconut
1/2 c. chopped dates

Mix the 1 cup flour with 1/2 cup brown sugar. Cut in butter as for pastry. Press firmly into a lightly greased 9"x13" pan. Bake in a moderate oven, 350 degrees, about 12 minutes. Cool on rack for 5 minutes.

Beat eggs and add the remaining brown sugar a few tablespoons at a time, beating constantly until light and fluffy. Stir in vanilla. Mix together the tablespoon of flour, baking powder and salt. Mix into eggs. Stir in nuts, coconut and dates. Spread over baked crust. Return to oven and bake 20 to 25 minutes. Cool in pan and then cut into bars.
