BANANA CAKE 
2 1/4 c. flour
2/3 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2/3 c. buttermilk
2 eggs
3/4 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 tsp. cloves
2/3 c. shortening
1 1/4 c. mashed bananas
1/2 c. chocolate chips
1 lg. banana, sliced
1 tsp. butter

Sift dry ingredients. Add shortening, buttermilk, and mashed bananas. Beat 2 minutes. Pour into greased 13 x 9 inch pan or 2 (9 inch) pans. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Melt chocolate chips and butter; cool. Spread frosting on layer, banana slices, etc. Frost all. Using back of spoon, swirl chocolate in frosting.

Frosting: Mix 3 egg whites, 1 cup sugar, 1/3 cup corn syrup, 3 tablespoons water, 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar in double boiler over boiling water until stiff peaks form, mixing constantly. Beat in 1 teaspoon vanilla.
