APPLE DUMPLINGS 
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 drops red food coloring
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
Peeled and cored apples (4)

Mix first 5 ingredients in saucepan and bring to boil. Add 2 tablespoons of butter; set aside. Sift dry ingredients, cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir just until moistened. Roll on floured board or waxed paper 1/4 inch thick. Cut in 6 inch squares.

Put a cored apple in center. Fill center of apple with a sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg mixture. Fold corners to center and pinch. Pinch sides also. Place 1 inch apart in 13 x 9 baking dish. Spoon syrup over dumplings. Sprinkle with sugar mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes.
