 Debbie (Michigan) says:
Add shredded cheese on top of potatoes then sprinkle crushed potato chips on top of cheese... then bake... it really makes for a great cheesy crunchy top for this dish!!!

I use one can of cream of mushroom and one can of cream of chicken. Also, add shredded cheese to the crushed corn flakes and melted butter for the topping. It gives the topping a beautiful brown and wonderful taste and texture! I've never served this without someone wanting the recipe.

Using O'Bryan potatoes works well too it's got the onion and red and green peppers for color. Yummy!!!

I used chip dip instead of sour cream, also added cheddar cheese soup and cream of celery. Very tasty.

I have recently experimented with a steak fajita mix. Added pepper jack cheese into the casserole as well.

And if I wanted to use crumbled Tator Tots???...

 Jeanne (Michigan) replies:
My husband accidentally picked up frozen tator tots instead of frozen cubed hash browns and I didn't discover it until I went to make it Easter morning. Used them anyway-did not turn out well. Maybe if the recipe is modified correctly, it might have worked but frozen tater tots are made with an oil coating which strangely "fused" with the cheese and hardened at the bottom of the casserole dish.

 Liz (Alberta) replies:
I used to work in a French fry factory where they made those and trust me those tater tots are deadly for grease! :)

 Leslie (United States) says:
I make this all the time for parties. It's great with Doritos or Sun Chips on top in place of the corn flakes. I'm using Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips this time.

 Sue (Texas) says:
After I introduced this to my daughter-in-law, she loved it so much she added browned ground meat and a can of corn, and served it as a main dish. We've all experimented with different soups, different brands/types of frozen hashbrowns, and different crunchies as toppings. I don't think it can be messed up!

Nice choice.

 KaLy (Ohio) replies:
I agree - you can't really mess this one up. I leave the milk out. I usually double it and add bacon. I also have done it in a slow cooker. I also don't bother with the topping but I'm tempted this tome to try Leslie's idea of cheddar sun chips.... YUMMY

 Sherry (Georgia) replies:
Do you just fix same as for oven when you put it in a crock pot? How long do you cook in crock pot?

 R E (Ohio) replies:
Crockpot uses the same mixture directions. Cook on low 4-5 hr.

Lay's Sour Cream and Onion chips make a great topping in place of corn flakes.

 Bradley Sauer says:
Do you use shredded hash browns or the cubed southern style?
 #20526
 Stephanie (Missouri) replies:
I use the shredded hash browns because they don't take as long to cook and I put fried onions on top! It is soooo good and has become a family favorite for Christmas.

I LOVE this dish! I vary it a little. I always double the recipe. Also, I fry 1 pound of bacon, draining the grease on paper towels, then crumbling it up and mixing it in. Instead of using 2 cans of crm soup, I use 1 can crm mushroom, and 1 can crm chicken. I ALWAYS get asked the recipe!!!
