FRUIT SQUARES 
1/2 c. Crisco
1 egg
1/4 c. orange or pineapple juice
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. orange rind
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. citrus fruit
1 c. raisins

Blend together shortening, sugar, egg, rind, and juice (do not use blender). Beat by hand until creamy. Mix all other ingredients in separate bowl, then add to liquid mixture. Mix well - dough will be firm.

Flatten with palm of hand into a greased cookie sheet. One batch makes enough for 3 cookies sheets. Bake at 400 degrees in a preheated oven for 10 minutes. Cut into squares while still warm.

Brush with lemon icing. Mix 1/2 pound confectioners' sugar with Real Lemon juice to loose consistency. Spread over squares or spread before cutting.
