HERMAN STARTER | |
1 pkg. active dry yeast 2 c. lukewarm water 2 c. flour In a large jar or bowl dissolve the yeast in the 2 cups warm water (if water is too hot it will kill the yeast). Add 2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Cover and let set at room temperature for 48 hours. Makes 2 cups of starter. Use 1 cup only to begin feeding instructions as if a friend had just surprised you with a cup of herman. Give the other cup to a friend along with the directions. HERMAN FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS: Today, you received a cup of Herman from a friend. Herman feels most comfortable in a large jar or crock. Feed him 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup milk. Put him in the refrigerator and stir every day. On the fifth day, feed him again the same amounts as Day one. Continue to stir every day. On Day 10, you will have 4-5 cups of Herman, and you will use 2 cups of Herman in your cake, or bread, save one cup for future Herman baking and pass one cup along to a friend. Don't forget to give your friend the feeding directions. |
