I make a slightly different one. I use green beans and cream of mushroom soup but use Cheese It crackers. I break up a box of crackers and line the bottom of the dish thinly with them, add green beans then soup, repeat and top with more broken crackers. Put in oven till hot then top with shreaded cheese and put back in to melt. Works great with asparagus. Makes a great holiday dish and my family loves it.

I love this recipe as much as everyone else. I like to include minced garlic and baked tomato. It gives it a little extra something. Being southern, I basically put tomato's on everything. Its just a matter of taste.

For an updated healthier version... use fresh string beans blanched in boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes. Instead of the crackers/Durkee onions, saute 3-4 shallots and garlic in olive oil then toss with the beans and the soup. Yum - still delicious with a fresher twist!

We called this recipe "funeral beans" because it was used so often to take to people for the post-funeral luncheon...is this geographic?

question on the french fried onions..do you use frozen? Should you thaw them first or just add them frozen?...Thanks

Bob, French fried onion rings come in a container, you sprinkle on top of the casserole.

I had it at a friends house, they used the garlic mushroom soup and I thought it tasted awful. I couldn't eat it.

I make it with french style frozen green beans, cook it the day before, refrigerate and reheat before serving. I think the flavor blends and tastes better reheated.

I like to add yellow beans too, along with the green beans it gives it a little color and kids love color. I still add milk, cream of mushroom soup and dried onions, dried onions only on top though.

I found this recipe is great with some crushed garlic cloves & shredded cheese added in to the mix. Makes for a different approach to an old favorite. I have even tried green pepper and on one occasion added some shaved carrot it really grabbed everyones attention one holiday.

Its hard to mess this one up! I used one large can of french cut green beans (28 oz.) and guessed on how much mushroom soup as I was using a box (I put in about 1 1/4 cups, it was runny but good) and omitted the milk. Just guessed on how much fried onions and pepper, and added paprika. It is very yummy, but make to casseroles if u want it for a potluck, I ate half the thing myself and could have ate more.

I add bacon bits to it for a little added protein & flavor.
