The great thing about this recipe is that you can whatever you want to it. I usually add corn or cucumbers to it. Its something you have to eat right away and not good made ahead of time. Also a little more than half a cup of dressing is plenty. Enjoy, we have for years now.

I've found that with this recipe it works a little better to add the crushed doritos at the table and as the salad is served. The less time they are exposed to moisture the longer the crunch lasts. Of course, if you like the softness of the doritos then it is awesome the way it is! Regardless, this recipe is a family favorite.

Its a great recipe except for the Doritos... There's nothing good about soggy Doritos. I put them in individual bowls and let each person add there own during dinner.

Instead of the seasonings I use taco seasoning mix. The adults love it as much as the kids.

We use Cool Ranch Doritos in ours. My sister in law introduced this recipe to our family and we love it!

I've made this for years, easy and is always a hit. Definitely do not add chips or Catalina dressing until ready to serve, or chips and lettuce will wilt. I only add chips and dressing to the amount I am serving now, as this makes so much, you can serve it more than once if you can keep the ingredients fresh.

I got the recipe from a friend, but hers called for thousand island dressing. I have always used that, so i will have to try the catalina dressing!

 Kathy (Utah) replies:
I too have always used thousand island dressing mixed with a can of El Paso taco sauce... Always a hit but must be served ASAP or lettuce wilts and chips get soggy.

I just spread the whole doritos on the plate and then top with the lettuce, meat, cheese, etc. I also use Dorothy Lynch salad dressing (i think it's similar to Catalina) and pour that on top before serving. My grandma always made taco salad this way, and everybody I make it for loves it! my grandma also used to put crunchy bacon bits on top which sounds odd but was very good.

I have been making my Taco Salad this way for years. I also season my browned ground beef with taco seasoning.Only difference is instead of the Catalina dressing, I use MILD Taco sauce and pour just a little all over then I top with Sharp shredded cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream and I sprinkle sliced black olives on top... Awesome! We LOVE it!
