ITALIAN CREAM CHEESE CAKE 
1 stick butter
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
5 egg yolks
2 c. plain flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. coconut
1 c. chopped pecans
5 egg white, stiffly beaten

Cream butter and shortening. Add sugar, beat well. Add egg yolks and beat. Add flour and soda which have been sifted together, alternately with buttermilk. Stir in vanilla and add coconut and pecans. Fold in egg whites. Pour into 3 greased and floured 9 inch layer cake pans and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until done.

ICING:

1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
1/2 stick butter
1 box confectioners sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Chopped nuts, if desired

Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add sugar and mix well. Add vanilla (thin with a few drops of milk if necessary). Spread on cake. Sprinkle nuts on top.
