OLD TIME SUGAR COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. lemon rind
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs, beaten
2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. baking powder

Blend shortening, salt, lemon rind and nutmeg. Add sugar gradually and cream well. Add eggs and milk; mix well. Sift flour with baking powder and soda. Add to creamed mixture blending well.

Drop from teaspoon on greased cookie sheets. Let stand a few minutes, then flatten cookies by stamping with a glass covered with a damp cloth. Sprinkle some cookies with sugar or coconut or nuts chopped or nut halves. Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) 10 minutes. Makes 3 1/2 dozen.
