AUNT LEILA'S BROWN SUGAR SPICE
CAKE
 
3/4 c. plus 2 tbsp. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
2 lg. eggs
2 egg yolks
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. double acting baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. sour milk or buttermilk

Bake in 8 x 12 inch oblong pan for 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees. Cream shortening and brown sugar. Beat eggs and yolks together and add to mixture. Sift together dry ingredients and add to mixture alternately with sour milk.

TOPPING:

2 egg whites
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. broken nuts
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar

Just before cake is done, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff. Gradually beat in brown sugar. Spread on cake the minute it comes out of oven. Sprinkle with nuts. Bake 7 minutes at 450 degrees until meringue is lightly browned.
