BURNT SUGAR CAKE | |
2/3 c. shortening 1 1/2 c. white sugar 3 egg yolks 2 1/2 c. flour 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 c. milk 3 1/2 tbsp. syrup (at bottom) 3 beaten egg whites SYRUP: Cook 1/2 cup sugar in thick pan until brown and smooth. Add 1/2 cup boiling water. Return to heat and cook until syrupy. Cream shortening, sugar, egg yolks and baking powder alternately. Add liquid and flour and last fold in egg whites. Bake in 2 layers at 350 degrees about 30 minutes. Use remaining syrup as icing liquid. |
