BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
Cream 1 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup of Crisco. 3 eggs separated, beat the yolk first, then add.

1 c. cold water
3 level tsp. baking powder
2 1/2 c. flour

Beat the batter 5 minutes. Then add the 3 egg whites, beaten well. Add burnt sugar. Flavor with vanilla. Bake in 1 or 2 layer cake pans.

First burn 1/2 cup sugar in a heavy iron skillet until liquid. Then take off stove and add 1/4 cup of hot boiling water. Set aside to cool, stir well.

FROSTING:

Cook in same pan where the sugar was burnt.

1/2 c. sweet cream
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. butter

Cook frosting to a soft ball when tried in cold water. Heat until it looks like it will spread.
