MAGGIE'S TORTE CAKE 
1/2 c. butter
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. cake flour, sifted
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs, beaten
Lemon or vanilla flavoring; optional
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Mix butter, sugars, cinnamon, flour and baking powder together like pie crust, using forks or pastry blender. Take out 1/2 cup for topping. Then add 1 cup buttermilk, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and beaten eggs to remainder. Pour into lightly greased and floured 9 x 9 or 9 x 11 baking pan. Sprinkle topping on cake, also chopped nuts. Bake at 350 degrees until toothpick comes out clean, about 30 minutes.
