FILLED DATE COOKIES 
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. quick oats
1 c. melted butter
1 c. nuts, finely chopped

FILLING:

1 pkg. (40) dates, chopped
1 c. water
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Cook filling until thick and smooth. Add vanilla, then cool.

To prepare crumb mixture, sift together flour, soda and salt and mix in sugar and oats. Add melted butter and nuts and mix thoroughly with hands.

Pat 1/2 crumb mixture in shallow greased tin. Put date filling on top and add remaining streusel mixture, patting it down well. Bake in very moderate oven (350 degrees) for 45 minutes. Cool, cut in squares or bars.
