DATE FILLED COOKIES 
3 1/2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. butter
1/4 c. milk
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Sift first 5 ingredients together; blend in butter. Add milk, eggs and vanilla.

FILLING:

1 lb. chopped dates
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Cook together in small pan: dates, sugar and water. Remove from stove. Add chopped nuts. Filling should be made first, so it has a chance to cool.

Roll out dough on floured surface; cut with round cookie cutter. Put scant teaspoons dates on cookie. Fold. Press edges together with fork dipped in flour. Bake 12-15 minutes at 400 degrees. This amount of filling makes enough for 2 batches of cookies.
