Creamed Chipped Beef

Creamed chipped beef and S.O.S. aren't the same thing. S.O.S. is made with ground beef. The chipped beef should definitely be sautéed first. It brings out the flavor.

Had it with chipped beef and ground beef, liked it all. Good breakfast for cold days.

Creamed chipped beef on home fries topped off with two sunny side eggs is the reason I stayed in the Army for twenty five years.

Always ate sos over toast and homefries. Loved it! Then one time had the opportunity to have it over a pancake rather than toast - it was heaven, now if there's pancakes and SOS offered, I opt for the SOS over a pancake and homefries!

My mom made this for our family of 5 for years. My dad was in the Navy til he retired. My husband was in the Army for almost 10 years. I love this recipe and enjoyed the comments and different variations. Thanks everyone :)

Most GI's grumbled about having SOS for chow but, secretly enjoyed it. My brother-in-law was a Navy cook on submarines for 20 years. He always told how when any veteran finds that out,the first thing they ask him is, "How do you make shot on the shingle?" As I remember, hamburger was used, not dried beef, in USAF.

To double the flavor... put a "small" dash of lemon pepper. Fantastic.... Have even added a dab of juice from pepperocini.... (but not in the same batch)... Have sliced tomatoes on the side... and LOCK THE DOOR... to make sure you are not disturbed....

This is also great - using a really thick slice of canned corned beef. It shreds easily and completely incorporates the sauced. Is excellent. I buy a can of corned beef - turn it into thick slices - freeze slices in advance - JUST to use for this recipe. Simply remove one slice night before - thaw in frig., and your ready for a fantastic breakfast next day.

The recipe as shown is a basic creamed chipped beef. It is not in any way, shape or form SOS. If you know what the term SOS means, you would know it is not white in color nor does it contain chipped beef. SOS is browned ground beef in brown gravy served on toast. Do I need to spell it out?
