CHOCOLATE CHIP CAKE 
3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
1 c. hot water
1 3/4 c. enriched flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 (7 or 8 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Melt chocolate in hot water and vanilla over low heat; blend thoroughly. Cool slightly, add to creamed mixture. Stir in the sifted dry ingredients. Pour into greased 7 x 12 inch cake pan. Sprinkle rows of chocolate chips and nuts over batter. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) for 45 minutes. Sprinkle with sifted powdered sugar while warm.
