Home cucumber fresh. Wash and cut them in slices. Soak 2 hours in salt water. Put in jars.
Mix 3 pounds of sugar to 1 gallon of vinegar or 1 1/2 cups to a pint of vinegar if smaller amount is desired.
Use regular pickling spice 1/2 teaspoon to each quart. 1 pinch of alum. 1 pinch amount you can put on handle of teaspoon. Cover with vinegar solution and lids.
Put in canner, have enough water to come up to lids. Bring to a boil. Tighten caps and put back in boiling water. Cook 2 minutes. Have vinegar hot. Remove from water, cover with towel until cool.
