YELLOW CAKE WITH CARAMEL ICING | |
2 1/2 c. sugar 1 c. butter 1/4 c. Crisco 5 eggs 1/8 tsp. salt 3 c. flour, sifted 1 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. vanilla flavoring 2 tsp. lemon flavoring 1 c. sweet milk Cream sugar, butter, and Crisco. Add eggs. Add baking powder and salt to mixture, alternately with milk. Add flavoring. Pour into greased tube pan and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove cake from pan while still warm. Top with: CARAMEL ICING: 2 c. sugar 1 c. milk 1 stick butter 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. water 1 tsp. vanilla Put sugar, milk, and butter in saucepan; let it get hot. Put sugar and water in an iron skillet and caramelize. Add the caramelized sugar to the milk mixture and cook until it forms a soft ball when dropped in cool water. Add vanilla and beat. |
