HIPPOPOTAMUS STEW
1 medium sized hippo
1 ton salt
Pepper, to taste
500 bushels potatoes
1000 gals. brown gravy
200 bushels carrots
400 sprigs parsley
2 small rabbits (optional)

Cut hippo meat into bite sized pieces. This will take about 2 months. Cut vegetables into cubes (another 2 months). Place meat into large pan and cover with gravy. Simmer for 4 weeks. Shovel in salt and pepper to taste. When meat is tender, add vegetables. A steam shovel is useful for this. Simmer slowly for 4 more weeks. Garnish with parsley.

Will serve 2,700 people. If more are expected, add 2 small rabbits - this is not recommended as very few people like hare in their stew.

I was scrolling through all the recipes to see what I can make with ingredients on hand, came across this one. Perfect, I can now take that hippo out of my freezer. Defrosting it while I cut up the carrots and potatoes. Can't wait to try this and I plan to surprise my husband, this is going to be his birthday dinner. Serving it with a side salad.

I tried this but left the Hippo whole and stuffed the cavity with turkeys. The only problem we had was the feathers tickled our throats going down.

Absolutely incredible!!!! The only hippo I could end up getting a hold of was pretty large so I ended up adding a bit more of everything but it turned out incredible! I also finally found a use for my great-great-grandfather's steam shovel, passed down through the generations, which is also great!

My family was allergic to hippo and we substituted elephant. However, we had to adjust the cook time!

So, for the Boy Scout people- this is preferable to the glop the scouts usually make. It would be part of their oath to be 'thrifty' The ASM' will want you as a certified Grub Master!

I think calls for more of a White Lightening sort of beverage not wine. I mean it's sort of a clandestine back yard sort of meal anyway. Hooch will help it go down better than a red zin.

I originally slow cooked mine with Yak brains & antelope urine. But my husband STILL said his Mother's recipe is better (just like every other dish i've slaved over tirelessly for the last 15 years). Determined to end this relentless competition, I drove the 14 hours to find out her culinary secrets. Yesterday, I served my family the same dish with one minor change. The family raved about it! I'm heating up some leftovers for the kids this afternoon. After all, they'll need their strength. Nana's been missing for a few weeks now and the kids have been instructed to search grid 7B. I sure hope they find her. The poor woman.

Oh my GOODNESS! This is my absolute favorite hippo recipe! I did end up adding about 1000 or so sausages for that extra zing. I made it for my mother's funeral and hubby ended up eating most of it, but the in-laws loved it too (thank GOD)!

Me crew and mateys arrived in ye ole Cape Town after the plundering of a small sloop on the coast. The locals offered us a wee water horse for our troubles in exchange for a cut of the treasure trove. Yer captain here made the decision after a few too many swigs of rum. The mateys had a wonderful shanty with this recipe. Without any hares for the eye to see, we resorted to plundering the bilge for rats. The stew gave me first mate the cobby wobbles, and drowned in rum me crew forgot to set weigh in the sand bay. Let me tell ye, I did set my weigh into the deep blue below- in yer gullet one way, out like a bullet the other.

You forgot to add - the 150 cloves of garlic - 100 large onions, chopped fine. Can shred leftovers - serve on bun with coleslaw. Called "Hillbilly Hippo".

Subsituted 3 bison's and a Shetland pony. Lower fat, easier to get but left me a little hoarse.
