1 pkg. dates
1 c. hot water
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tbsp. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1 pkg. chocolate chips
1/2 c. nuts

Cut up dates. Pour hot water and baking soda over dates; set aside to cool. Cream together shortening, sugar, beaten eggs, flour, cocoa and salt. Add date mixture. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.
