WHITE LAYER CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. cold water
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
3 egg whites

Cream shortening and sugar until very light; add water slowly and beat constantly. Stir in flour and baking powder; add vanilla. Mix in egg whites (beaten stiff). Bake in two greased layer cake tins at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Put layers together when cool, with fresh strawberry or maple icing.
