THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1 c. soft shortening (1/2 butter)
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Combine shortening, sugar, egg yolks and vanilla until creamy. Add rest of ingredients. Roll in small balls and dip in slightly beaten egg whites and then in chopped nuts or coconut. Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 5 minutes, remove from oven and quickly place half of a red or green candied cherry in center and return to oven and bake for about another 5 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees.
