CONGO BARS 
1/3 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2-1 c. chocolate bits
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and vanilla; beat well. Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture; mix well. Stir in chocolate bits (and nuts, if desired). Spread in greased 9 x 9 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Cut in bars while warm. May be doubled and cooked in 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan.
