GERMAN APPLE CAKE 
5 apples
5 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
3 c. unsifted flour
2 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
4 eggs
1 c. oil
2 tsp. vanilla
1/3 c. orange juice
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

Grease and flour 10-inch tube pan. Peel apples, slice then; toss with 5 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon; set aside. Mix together flour, sugar, salt, eggs, oil, vanilla, orange juice, baking soda, and baking powder. Mix at low speed for 1 minute. Clean sides of bowl with spatula.

Increase speed to medium and blend for 3 minutes. (Dough will be thick.) Fill pan with alternating layers of batter and apples - three layers of batter, two of apples. Bake for 1 1/2 hours in 350 degree oven. Cool on rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pan.

GLAZE:

2 tbsp. soft butter
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1-2 tbsp. water
1 1/2 c. confectioners sugar

Blend together and spread on cake.
