CARAMELS 
2 cups sugar
1 1/3 cups light corn syrup (Karo)
1 cup (2 sticks) butter
pinch of salt
1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk (Carnation)
walnuts (optional)

Combine all ingredients except milk and walnuts. Boil until a firm ball will form in cold water (244-248°F on candy thermometer), stirring constantly.

Add milk and continue cooking until very thick, Add walnuts (if using).

Pour into 8x8-inch glass baking dish. When cool cut into squares; wrap in waxed paper.

Cooks Note: Use of a candy thermometer is recommended.
