APPLE-WALNUT BREAD 
3 c. sifted regular flour
3/4 c. sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. diced pared apple
1/2 c. finely chopped walnuts
1 egg
3/4 c. milk
3 tbsp. shortening, melted

Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon into a large bowl. Stir in diced apple and walnuts to mix well. Beat the egg slightly with milk and shortening in a small bowl. Pour all at once into flour mixture and stir just until evenly moist.

Spoon batter into a well-greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean and loaf pulls away from sides of pan.

Make it a day ahead, for it slices best if allowed to mellow overnight.
