HAMBURGER STEW OR TRAMP'S
HANDOUT
 
1 lb. ground beef
1/2 tsp. marjoram
1 lg. onion, chopped
4 sm. sliced carrots
1/3 c. flour
1 tbsp. thyme
Salt to taste
1/2 c. frozen peas
4 lg. sliced potatoes
2/3 c. water

Saute ground beef and onions. Add remaining ingredients and cover with water. Simmer 1/2 hour. Be sure that the water doesn't boil off. For gravy mix flour and water and then add to the stew.

During the depression when the tramps came to the back door begging for food, often this economical meal was served in return for a job done.
