ORANGE NUT BREAD 
Rind from 4 lg. oranges
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. hot water
1/2 c. sugar
6 tbsp. shortening
1 c. milk
4 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 c. nuts
2 eggs

Peel oranges and cover rinds only with hot water; boil until tender; drain. Remove white membrane; cut rind into narrow strips and drop into syrup made by boiling 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water until it spins a thread. Cook slowly 5 minutes, drain, save syrup to glaze bread.

Sift flour, salt, baking powder and sugar; add shortening, eggs and milk. Mix thoroughly. Add drained orange rinds and nuts. Pour into well-greased loaf pan. Let rise 20 minutes. Bake about 1 hour at 350 degrees. Glaze with drained syrup.
