DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE (RED) 
1/2 c. butter
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. sour milk
1 heaping tsp. baking soda
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
2/3 c. cocoa, dissolved in 1/2 cup boiling water
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter; slowly add sugar and cream thoroughly. Add well beaten eggs and soda dissolved in little hot water, also cocoa mixed with little hot water. Alternately add sour milk and flour. Mix to smooth batter; add vanilla and bake in moderate oven 35 to 40 minutes.
