OLD-FASHIONED STRAWBERRY
SHORTCAKE

2 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
1/3 c. shortening
3/4 c. milk
Butter
1 qt. strawberries
Cream

Mix and sift dry ingredients and work in the shortening with the fingers or a knife. Gradually add enough milk to make a soft dough, mixing with a knife. Toss the dough onto a floured board and tap and roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Bake in sheets for a large shortcake or cut with a biscuit cutter for individual shortcakes. Bake in very hot 450 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

When done, split into 2 parts, butter and put crushed, sweetened berries between the layers and on top. Serve with pitcher of heavy cream.
