BRAIDED BREAD (COMMUNION BREAD) | |
6 to 6 1/2 c. bread flour 4 pkg. yeast 2 c. milk 1 1/2 sticks butter 2/3 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 6 eggs Combine all yeast and 3 cups flour. Stir together well and set aside. In saucepan, mix milk, butter, sugar and salt. Heat to just before boiling stage. Stir frequently. Set aside and cool to lukewarm. Mix liquid mixture with flour mixture in a large bowl. Use mixer. Add eggs. Mix until all flour is moist. Add flour, stirring with large spoon until texture is ready to be put onto floured surface for kneading. Continue to add flour until dough is rubbery. (This usually takes more than the 6 1/2 cups flour.) Put into large greased bowl. Cover with towel. Place bowl in a very warm area for 1 hour. Divide into balls 2 to 8 according to loaf size desired. Divide each ball into 3 balls. Make each ball into a long strip. Try to squeeze out air pockets. Braid together and place on greased baking sheet pans. Set aside for 1 hour. Bake in preheated 325 degree oven for 15-20 minutes. |
