I have made this recipe but I made it where I lined the bottom of the pan with potatoes, put the meat gravy mixed veggies and shredded cheddar cheese then put potatoes on top and sprinkled cheddar cheese on top. My family loved it.

Shepherd's pie is made with lamb/mutton; cottage pie is made with beef. You don't see shepherds with a flock of cows.

Does it really matter, PowerFailure? I've never known this recipe to be called anything but Shepards Pie, and it was always made with beef. Than again, I've always known football to mean football, and soccer to mean soccer.

Shepherd's Pie uses lamb or mutton. Sorry, they don't have sheep in Texas.

I used the mix steamer veggies with corn, carrots, peas and green beans-mot the egg from the mashed potatoes (it isn't needed)-use a (prepared) dry envelope of brown gravy, and cover the meat/veg mixture completely with the potatoes. This is a hit, and it is easy to prepare and have the ingredients on hand at all times.

This was a fabulous recipie! It worked well, but because I such picky eaters I puree'd the veggies and added them and it still worked perfect. Thanks for the recipie! Powerfailure perhaps try batteries then you won't be so anal of such little things... Flock of cows... pfffftt.

My favorite is still browned hamburger and chopped onion on the bottom, then a layer of cream style corn, then mashed potatoes with cheese on top. Brown in oven until potatoes are a golden brown. I agree that beef is the best... and my Gramma called it cottage pie... she's from Massachusetts.
