GRANDMA'S WHITE BREAD
2 pkgs. yeast
4 c. warm water
4 tbsp. melted shortening
4 tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tbsp. salt
9-10 c. all-purpose flour

Dissolve yeast in a cup of the warm water. Add shortening, sugar, salt to remaining water, stir in yeast mixture. Sift 9 cups of flour. Add liquid mixture gradually, mixing with wooden spoon. Turn out onto well-floured board, knead until smooth, adding 10th cup of flour as needed.

Let rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Turn out onto floured board, knead briefly. Form into 3 loaves. Let rise until even with top of pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Brush lightly with butter while still warm.
