GRANDMA'S WHITE BREAD | |
2 pkgs. yeast 4 c. warm water 4 tbsp. melted shortening 4 tbsp. sugar 1 1/2 tbsp. salt 9-10 c. all-purpose flour Dissolve yeast in a cup of the warm water. Add shortening, sugar, salt to remaining water, stir in yeast mixture. Sift 9 cups of flour. Add liquid mixture gradually, mixing with wooden spoon. Turn out onto well-floured board, knead until smooth, adding 10th cup of flour as needed. Let rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Turn out onto floured board, knead briefly. Form into 3 loaves. Let rise until even with top of pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Brush lightly with butter while still warm. |
