HERMITS 
2 c. raisins
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. nuts

Cover raisins with cold water. Boil 15 minutes. Drain and cool. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time. Add sifted dry ingredients, then nuts and raisins. Sprinkle top with sugar. Bake in greased 13"x9" pan for thick hermits or spread on cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Cool and cut into squares.
