Old Fashioned Hermit Bars

 MarkB (Massachusetts) says:
If it has no molasses in it, it's not a hermit bar. Boston did a huge business with the Caribbean, and molasses was a major part of the trade. Baked bars without molasses may be good - they just aren't hermit bars. Especially 'old fashioned.'

 It's your choice (Montana) says:
Solution: Substitute some or all of the sugar with molasses. I'd suggest 1/2 cup molasses for 1/2 cup sugar. Your taste may vary.
