FAVORITE OATMEAL COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Grated rind of 1 sm. orange
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. water
1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. oatmeal, uncooked
6 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 c. chopped pecan or walnuts

Heat oven to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bowl mix together shortening, sugar, vanilla, and orange rind. Beat with a wooden spoon or an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.

In a separate bowl beat the egg. Dissolve the baking soda in the tablespoon of water and add to the beaten egg. Pour egg mixture into creamed shortening mixture; mix well. Add the rest of the ingredients one at a time. Stir well after each addition.
