CHERRY CHOCOLATE DATE CAKE 
1 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate bits
2 c. chopped nuts
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. sliced maraschino cherries
Blanched slivered almonds for top

Beat eggs well and blend in vanilla. Gradually add sugar. Sift flour before measuring, then add to baking powder and salt. Add dry ingredients to sugar and egg mixture, a small amount at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in dates, chocolate bits and nuts. Then add 3/4 cup cherries, reserving 1/4 cup cherries for top of cake.

Spread batter in well-oiled 9 x 3 1/2 inch tube pan or bread pan. Decorate top with blanched almonds and remaining 1/4 cup cherries. Bake at 325 degrees for approximately 2 1/2 hours or until done when tested with toothpick.
