2 c. flour, sifted
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening (melted butter or soft butter)
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add shortening, about 2/3 of the milk and the vanilla. Beat thoroughly, then add the egg and the rest of the milk and beat again. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees in 1 large cake pan or 2 small ones.

When the doctor was examining fourth grade in Muir, I got home from school early, so mother asked me if I'd like to bake a cake. I jumped at the chance. She stored her baking SODA in a handy baking POWDER can, which I didn't know, and the cake ran all over the oven.
