MOM'S BREAD PUDDING 
3 eggs, separated
1 c. sugar
1 qt. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. nutmeg (optional)
10 c. stale 1 inch bread cubes
1 c. raisins

MERINGUE:

3 egg whites
6 tbsp. sugar

In large bowl, beat eggs, adding sugar gradually. Add milk and vanilla, mixing thoroughly. Add bread cubes and raisins and toss. Set aside for at least 15 minutes. Can be longer. Generously butter 9x13 inch baking dish. Pour mixture into pan and smooth top. Bake at 350 degrees just until set, 30 to 45 minutes.

Beat egg whites until stiff, adding sugar gradually. Spread over cooked pudding and place in 400 degree oven for about 5 minutes or until meringue begins to brown.
