FRESH APPLE BREAD 
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. shortening
2 eggs, beaten
1 c. grated apple
1/2 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. nutmeats
1 1/2 tbsp. buttermilk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix 3 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon in small dish and set aside. Cream 1 cup sugar and shortening; add eggs and apple. Mix in dry ingredients to which nutmeats have been added. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla. Pour into greased loaf pan; sprinkle top with mixture of cinnamon and sugar.

Bake 1 hour in preheated oven at 350°F.

If I don't have buttermilk, I use sour milk.
