GOLD LAYER CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
2 1/4 c. sifted cake flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 c. milk
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Stir shortening just to soften. Stir in dry ingredients. Add 2/3 cup milk; mix until all flour is dampened. Beat for 2 minutes, add remaining milk, eggs and vanilla; beat for 2 minutes more. Bake in 2 paper-lined 9 x 1 1/2-inch round pans at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
