ORANGE LIQUEUR | |
1 c. water 1 1/4 c. sugar Thin peelings of 1 lg. orange 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise 3 tbsp. pure orange extract (yes, tbsp.) 1 tsp. pure lemon extract 8 drops yellow food coloring 1 drop red food coloring 2 c. vodka In a medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, orange peelings and vanilla bean. Bring to a boil, then cook uncovered 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Take from heat, stir in extracts and food colorings. Cool well, then add the vodka. Pour into jars with tight-fitting lids and let stand 2 weeks before serving. If you can't find vanilla bean, you may substitute 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract, NOT imitation, with vodka. Beans give superior flavor. Coloring really isn't necessary but makes a very pretty liqueur. |
