2 c. sifted flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. milk, minus space taken up by egg

Sift flour before measuring, then sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut shortening into mixture until fine (as for pie). Break egg into measuring cup and beat slightly with fork. Fill cup to 1 cup level and stir. Add to other ingredients and stir just enough to mix thoroughly. Bake in greased muffin tins in a hot (400 degree) oven until browned lightly.
